Civil and Environmental Engineering 2024 Summer Internship

Organized by
School of Engineering and Applies Sciences (SEAS) University of the District of Columbia (UDC)

Are you a high school student from the greater Washington, DC area with a passion for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you! Our Civil and Environmental Engineering Summer Internship Program at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC)—the nation's only public historically black college and university (HBCU)—is designed to give you hands-on engineering experience that will set you on the path to becoming a future engineer.

This internship is not just about learning; it’s about diving deep into the real-world engineering challenges of the 21st century. You’ll explore the dynamic fields of civil and environmental engineering, with a special focus on the water-energy-food-climate nexus—one of the most critical areas of innovation today. Throughout the program, you’ll engage in a variety of activities that span structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, and environmental engineering, along with other STEM disciplines. From experimental projects to advanced modeling activities, you’ll gain firsthand experience in solving the kinds of problems engineers tackle every day.

Our summer camps are rigorous six-week programs designed for middle and high school students who are serious about pursuing careers in engineering and STEM. These are highly selective programs—application involves an interview, forms, school transcripts, and other required documentation. But here’s the best part: not only is this program completely free, but you’ll also receive a stipend for your participation!

We have just 15 spots available, so if you’re interested, be sure to contact the program coordinator for the Civil Engineering internship as soon as possible. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the program is open to students of all gender identities.

This unique program is led by Dr. Hossain Azam, P.E., Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering, with the enthusiastic support of the Civil Engineering faculty and staff at UDC’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). We also have strong backing from the UDC President’s Office, ensuring a rich and supportive learning environment.

If you’re ready to explore what it means to be an engineer and make a difference in the world, this program is for you. Don’t miss out on this chance to jumpstart your engineering journey!

NOTE: Application deadlines for summer internships starts on April 1st & ends on June 15th each year!
